Techno-Tolerance

It was only but a few decades ago that we had to call someone by cranking our phones digit by digit. Snail mail was the go-to. Dial-up was a thing. And, having to type an actual web address to get anywhere was a must. That was a time when patience was necessary for survival.


Now, technology is king and all can be done from your fingertips in nearly any location you desire (if your carrier can hack it). We’ve had a plethora (yes, El Guapo would be proud) of advances since the dawn of the internet in such a short amount of time, respectively. YET, we scold, berate, roll our eyes at, AND/OR toss our devices to the side with a huff, a puff, and a “blow me” with such disdain. We could swear they have a vendetta against our progress and pleasure.



We let the lag time or dysfunction of our devices get us so worked up. I’ve been battling with this often lately. What I’ve realized is that getting upset over an inanimate device for unintentionally not working like “it’s supposed to” is not making my situation any better. It’s not going to work faster or harder because I’m heated about the issue.

Yes, we have deadlines and few precious moments to enjoy our breaks from the monotony or stress of our days. However, your energy is much better spent on something positive for yourself.


Instead of letting anger or frustration rule your moments, take a deep breath and continue doing something else that is pleasing, helpful, or necessary that will not stress you out (try not to put that energy into eating something unhealthy). Let your boiling energy shift to simmer.

Wait out the glitch or call IT if you need to. Let it go. Shrug it off. It will come back. If not, your boss/co-workers/customers/friends/fam/significant other should understand; they’ve ALL been there. I get that some jobs or careers have higher stakes, but if it wasn’t meant to work at that moment, you REALLY can’t do anything about it. I know some loved ones can be impatient or demanding, but you can only do so much. If someone can’t have compassion for you in that instance, they probably don’t deserve what you’re doing for them.


Let’s go over those steps again:

  1. Don't push buttons - Take a deep relaxing breath.

  2. Unplug for a few minutes - shrug it off with a shoulder dance to keep your good mood flowing.

  3. Ditch the glitch - Turn your attention to something that will let your positive energy thrive. Or you can just reset with a mini mental-break.

  4. Get ready to reboot - Give your machine some time to be ready to come back and be there for you.

  5. Restore yourself - If necessary, write an explanatory email to those who were expecting something from you.

By no means am I claiming this is easy. This is going to be a process for some more than others. Just know that not taking this personally and knowing that you are the master of your emotions will keep you grounded. We can do this! I believe in us.
